Why Summer Dance is So Important

With the start of our eight-week summer semester only five weeks away, now is a great time to talk about why summer is a critical time for students to continue their dance training.

Let’s start with the youngest students.  During summer dance classes, our creative movement and pre-ballet students will continue to explore their creativity, practice their social skills and strengthen their ability to follow directions.  When the fall semester begins, our summer students will be accustomed to the expectations and routines of the studio, and will not experience any learning loss commonly referred to as “summer slide.”

For dancers experiencing a lot of physical growth such as our Ballet 1 and Ballet 2 students, dancing over the summer helps to develop their balance, strength and coordination while keeping them physically active.  Moreover, these dancers will not experience a regression in their understanding of the fundamentals that often accompanies a summer hiatus from dancing.

Dancing over the summer is particularly important for our pre-pointe and pointe dancers (Ballet 3, Ballet 4 and Ballet 5 students).  This is because the body needs to be really well conditioned for pointe.  With summer classes, muscles stay engaged and in working shape, ready to get back to it in the fall with less chance for sprains, strains, and tears.  In short, summer is an excellent opportunity for more advanced dancers to concentrate on technique, remain on pointe, and build stamina and stability, thereby preventing future injuries.
